Tax season is already stressful, and now, with major changes at the IRS, many taxpayers are left wondering: Will this affect my tax return or refund?

The IRS is going through a leadership crisis. Acting Commissioner Douglas O’Donnell is stepping down—the second IRS leader to leave in just a few months. Meanwhile, the IRS is also cutting more than 6,000 jobs, raising concerns about how efficiently they can process returns and refunds.

Will IRS Changes Delay My Refund?

The IRS claims that refunds will still be processed within 21 days for e-filed returns and at least 4 weeks for paper returns. However, with ongoing staff reductions and management shifts, some delays could happen, especially if your return requires manual review.

How to Protect Your Refund from Delays

·         File Early – The sooner you submit your return, the better your chances of getting your refund on time.

·         E-File and Choose Direct Deposit – Paper returns take longer, and mailing a check adds delays.

·         Double-Check Your Information – Errors can trigger manual reviews, slowing down your refund.

·         Monitor Your Status – Use the IRS "Where’s My Refund?" tool for updates.

What’s Next for the IRS?

With Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency reviewing IRS operations and Trump’s nominee Billy Long waiting for confirmation as the next commissioner, the IRS could see even more changes soon. For now, Melanie Krause will take over as acting commissioner, but it’s unclear how this will impact taxpayers long-term.
